Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena

Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena is a small medieval village perfectly integrated into the mountain landscape. Its stone houses follow the slope and cluster around the hill beneath the castle, while narrow lanes, arches, stairways and covered passages weave through the historic centre.

As you enter the village, the streets become increasingly narrow, giving way to a maze of lanes, small squares and houses built closely together. Climbing toward the upper part of the village, views of the Val Neva and the surrounding mountains open up between the houses.

Castelvecchio is best explored slowly, without necessarily following a fixed route. Take time to wander through the narrow lanes, pass beneath the covered walkways and climb to the higher parts of the village, stopping now and then to enjoy the views.

Why visit:

To lose yourself among narrow lanes, arches and stone houses in one of the most atmospheric medieval villages of Liguria’s inland region, immersed in a setting that feels almost suspended in time.

When to go:

All year round. In spring and autumn, temperatures are ideal for walking through the narrow lanes; in summer, the cooler hours of the day are best. Winter also has its charm, especially on clear days.

Additional Information

The historic centre is explored entirely on foot, along narrow lanes, stairways and stone-paved streets. We recommend comfortable shoes, and on damp days, trekking shoes.
